Peter Goldsmith

Gabe Di Maio, Program Director of WNED in Buffalo reports the passing of beloved broadcaster and friend to many of us, Peter Goldsmith.

It is with great sadness that I must report that Peter Goldsmith, the first Program Director of Classical 94.5 WNED, passed away suddenly on Tuesday night. As details of funeral arrangements become available, I will let you know.

  1. Peter was one of the true giants of classical music radio, and a believer in making the art form accessible to as many as possible. Peter worked hard to remove the pretentious crap with which much of the classical music business surrounds itself, and sought always to humanize the music. His passing is a real loss, and I will miss him as a friend.

  2. Peter Goldsmith was an announcer on
WCLV during the 70s. Both he and his brother Martin Goldsmith, for many
years host of NPR’s Performance Today, started their broadcasting careers
at WCLV. After leaving WCLV, he became the first program director at WITH in
Hershey, Pennsylvania and then the first program director at Classical
WNED in Buffalo, a post he held for decades until his retirement two years
ago. He was a consumate talented professional. It is appropriate that the very comprehensive and oh-so-neat WNED music library with all of the LPs collected over the years still in place is named in his honor.

I was honored to attend and speak at his retirement luncheon at WNED.

The Goldsmith boys’ mother, Rosemary, was a violist for many years with
    The Cleveland Orchestra.
