Good News in Portland

All Classical FM at 89.9 in Portland, Oregon is having another spectacular year.  My co-blogger Jack Allen would never toot his own horn, but the station is up 58% in listenership over two years.  They have a 3.6 share, according to Arbitron, and have broken into the top ten stations in the city.   In addition to new audience, All Classical’s revenues are at an all-time high, and they have a balanced budget.

Welcome, Jack Allen

Co-author’s welcome: I don’t want to steal any of Jack’s thunder, so I’m just going to say a few words and then get out of the way.  Jack is one of those people I turn to for wisdom and advice.  He is on the ground doing the actual work of running a station which makes his perspective invaluable.  Besides that, he’s an engaging raconteur, a deep thinker, and exactly the kind of leader who can rescue and reinvent classical music radio.  With that, here’s Jack’s opening post, with my gratitude. ~ Marty Ronish

Cape Cod Station in Bankruptcy

Classical WFCC on Cape Cod is part of a cluster of stations whose parent company, Sandab,  filed for Chapter 11 protection on Wednesday.   We’ll keep you posted. Mike has an inspiring post for Monday called Keeping Classical Radio Vital for the Future, by  Jack Allen, P.D. in Portland OR.  It’s another example of what I consider “serial encouragement” that should help counterbalance all the discouraging news.
