WDAV assumes production of World of Opera

WDAV in Davidson, N.C., announced Friday that it will be taking over production of NPR World of Opera from the D.C.-based network. Ben Roe, now general manager at WDAV, previously worked as NPR’s director of music and brought together the show’s host and producer. The show airs on 87 stations. Here’s the full release:

WDAV 89.9 CLASSICAL PUBLIC RADIO TO PRODUCE NPR WORLD OF OPERA

December 18, 2009 | DAVIDSON, NC — WDAV 89.9 Classical Public Radio announced today that as of January 18, 2010, the station will take over production of National Public Radio’s World of Opera, keeping in place NPR’s successful creative team of host Lisa Simeone and producer Bruce Scott. WDAV General Manager Benjamin K. Roe is the new executive producer. The show will continue to be marketed and distributed by NPR.

Music Writing and Classical Radio

The death of classical music is not only an old topic, but broad as well. Looking at a few recent posts on classical music blogs, the discussion appears to be focusing more on specific aspects of classical music’s supposed morbidity.

Anne Midgette (blogging at the Washington Post’s Classical Beat) wonders whether the classical CD business is dying, and in response British music commentator Norman Lebrecht wrote that ways of communicating about classical music are disappearing.

WLIU On The Auction Block

A quick note, and Happy Monday! WLIU on Long Island is up for sale or is available for some sort of creative partnership, according to Tom Taylor of Radio-Info. WLIU’s owner, Long Island University is going to stop supporting the NPR-affiliate in October for financial reasons.  The station is mostly news and jazz, though it does play some classical, and one of the announcers is Bonnie Grice, who is well known to those of us in the classical world. We’ll keep you posted.
