In order to move forward, first you must “retreat”….plus handing the keys to the musicians!
We had Drew here this week for the purpose of beginning the process to re-structure our organization to be ready for the future. Being that we are in a strong position and not in crisis makes this the perfect time for that process. In other words, rather than waiting for the fires to start, we are attempting to make ourselves fire proof! There were two retreats and many meetings. I am going to let Drew extrapolate on his visit here and instead focus on his chat with myself and one of our musicians about a program that I hope will be repeated everywhere!…..
Firstly Drew posted the interview this morning about the Springfield Symphony’s Musicians Initiative Fund over which the musicians have complete autonomy. The fund is designed to further the outreach mission of the Symphony with programs created by the musicians. Listening to the chat between Drew, SSO Cellist Joan Gasaway (pictured left) will give a synopsis of how it works, how it became established along with some of the incredible programming created as a result. It has been a tremendous boost for the organization and the community. One of the side benefits is that it encourages musicians to interact with one another and the community outside of the rehearsals and concerts. They now stay in touch with us and with each other to talk about ideas throughout the season, not just at concert time which is sometimes only once a month. One of the most important aspects though is that the program is based on trust. The board trusts the musicians with these funds ($5000.00) by giving them complete freedom to do what they wish. Reports on the programming are given at the board meetings, and once a year at budget time the board simply votes whether or not to allocate the money for the following season. Last month they voted unanimously to continue the funding for next season!
