A Little Help Here!…Part 2

We’ve all heard of no pain…no gain! We all espouse and/or have been told that we need to exercise fiscal responsibility, but what about fiscal accountability? Why is it that in a good year orchestras tout their fiscal responsibility, when in fact sometimes it’s only a good year because some of next year’s advance ticket money is spent to make it a good year…isn’t that fiscally irresponsible, cheating or maybe even fraudulent?…..

A little help here!!!!!!

The full force of the reality of Orchestra bankruptcy arrived in a simple letter informing me that I was being let go as Principal Pops Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony.  Then I  realized nearly 100 people received this letter and the organization I had worked with for nearly a decade was about to cease to exist.  The cost of a city losing an orchestra is immeasurable and losing the brilliant musicians who were excellent every day and are now out of work, is simply unacceptable.   I have a simple request…..

We are for Profit…aren’t we?…..

I am up here in Lake Placid  for 6 weeks of concerts in the glorious Adirondacks with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta.  Something is really bothering me, even though I am here in paradise.  The words not-for-profit have such a negative connotation.  I know it’s a widely used categorical description but it’s not accurate in the figurative sense and unfortunately on so many occasions when an orchestra’s financial situation is akin to a house on fire often the solution offered is to not to douse the flames, but to destroy the house!….

Quick Takes: A Sustainable Business Model…How is it Possible?

It seems that a huge focus in the Symphony world is to create the ideal business model for success.  Thousands of hours and millions of dollars are spent on conferences, consultant fees,  marketing schemes etc… and yet the secret ingredient, is neither a secret, not does it cost anything.  The best business model without it will fail, yet the worst business model with it might actually succeed!…….

Adjusting the Seasonings in Salt Lake! – Time to Make a Play!

The Utah Symphony and Opera have been rescued by a very large gift which is great news.  A couple of articles about their situation got me thinking more about community outreach and how the tangible resonance of a hall  needs to be matched with the resonance felt within and even beyond our communities.  More importantly though, it’s now time for Orchestras to stop playing defense in this recession and start to become a player in getting America out of it!……We are faced with possibly the greatest opportunity ever to become relevant, so it’s time get off the bench and fight!…..

Concert Companion….Bring a Friend to the CSO!

I’m a big fan of technology, I’m always bummed out when something I have is super seeded by a new model.  I still have that old crusty 1st generation ipod touch (18 months old!).  I was intrigued like many when the Concert Companion first came out, a device to enhance the understanding of the concert experience with real time program notes, video and other features. After the initial buzz, it kind of died down, and I haven’t heard much about it since and it seems that some are using Twitter for live notes.  Well the creator of CoCo (it’s nickname) is now in charge of an Orchestra, one that needs a serious recharge, but I’m pretty sure a CoCo or an internet connection is not the answer…..

Plugging the Holes before Filling the Barrel (2009) – Put it in the Bank….

I’m 41 today yikes….On the theme of free tickets, when there are empty seats there is an opportunity for outreach.  Subscribers have a choice of what to do with their tickets if they are not able to attend such as to give them to friends/family etc.. or to take a tax deduction.  There is another choice that could be offered that would turn a subscriber into an active participant in a community outreach program…..
