Cliburn Soundoff! – It’s OVER – wrap with James and wild closing!

I wanted to post Monday, but it was such a blur!  For the final post from this year’s Cliburn, I post the final two parts of my conversation with James Conlon, and I edited a two part audio clip of the closing ceremony complete with wild (and very frank) opinions, Van speaking, the awarding of medals and my brief interaction with the Gold medalist(s) at the closing reception.  A little Rachmaninov thrown in also!!

James Conlon speaks passionately about the OREL Foundation with the mission of

Rediscovering Suppressed Musical Treasures of the 20th Century

Our discussion ranges from art to justice:

I edited together some audio from the closing ceremony. In part 1 some wild opinions in the lobby followed by Van speaking to the crowd:

In part 2, the medals are awarded and a brief hello to the Gold medal winners Nobuyuki Tsujii and Haochen Zhang:

It’s hard to believe it’s over and I have had a day to think about the results. I want to write about the tied Gold medal and the significance this time as opposed to when it happened in 2001. I believe that we witnessed something extraordinary. I will wait a week or so but will definitely get back to it. I want to thank everyone who helped me with their time in allowing me to interview them, I had a blast, and now time to Soundoff!…….for now

  1. Hello Ron,
I have truly enjoyed your posts about the Van Cliburn! We lived in the Fort Worth area for more than 20 years and the Van Cliburn, The Bass Hall, The Worthington and all the trappings of the competition bring back a lot of good memories for me. Fort Worth is a great city for the arts. Thanks so much for sharing your time there!

  2. Thanks for your reporting on the Cliburn. I enjoyed your interviews, and the insights they gave.

I listened and watched many of the sessions of the competition on the internet live broadcast, and today I was really pleased to find out that they will continue to be available as archives for at least a year. ALL of the recitals, chamber music and concertos are there, and some other material too. The site is http://www.cliburn.tv

This is an incredible resource for music lovers all over the world. Thanks to the Cliburn Foundation and whoever else makes this possible.

    Bill in Dallas
