More Classical in Nebraska

Some changes at KVNO and NET in Omaha and Lincoln are going to allow more Nebraskans to hear classical music.  From Dr. Michael Hilt, Associate Dean and Professor of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Omaha:

Both KVNO and NET Radio are classical music stations … The KVNO service area (Omaha metropolitan area) will be expanded through the entire state from roughly 10 p.m. to 5 or 6 a.m. seven days a week.  NET Radio will have its Monday through Friday afternoon program (1-4 p.m.) on the air in Omaha.  I would say that both entities view the relationship as an increase in audience/listening area during those time periods.

In addition, the partnership will allow KVNO and NET Radio to work together in other areas.  This will result in a more efficient business model.

Jeff Korblik of the Lincoln Journal Star has more here and here.

Rod Bates, general manager of NET Radio’s parent company Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, said the difficult economy forced NET Radio and KVNO to enter into conversations.

He and UNO chancellor John Christensen hope the collaboration leads to reductions in programming costs and increases in revenue through fundraising for both stations. The move will give NET Radio a foot in the Omaha market, while KVNO will enjoy an elevated profile statewide.

“This is not a wholesale swap or merger here,” Bates said. “That would be too dramatic. We’re trying to build a relationship.”

Bravo to both for seeing collaboration as the best solution.  We wish you well.
