Cliburn Soundoff! – Vacatello/Son/Rodzinski/Tsujii/Conlon/Bozhanov – Audio

From the Cliburn, more from my chat with Richard focusing on how new media can affect an artist’s performance, candid clips from 4 of the finalists including a couple of excerpts from their 1 on 1 rehearsals with James Conlon who arrived yesterday plus an interesting clip with finalist Yeol Eum Son and Cliburn general manager Maria Guralnik about the practicalities of being a non US resident about to be flooded with concert engagements.  Some of this you will not see or hear on the web-cast!….

Mariangela Vacatello seen on the right talks to someone in Italian right after the announcement (kneeling at the front of the stage), we then have a quick chat:

Yeol Eum Son sits down with Maria Guralnik an myself and she learns quickly that the reality of having a concert career in the US if you are not a citizen or a resident (she lives in Hanover Germany!) means that some paperwork needs to be done. The Cliburn is pretty used to this!

Finalist Nobuyuki Tsujii is the first blind pianist to make it to the finals, he has won everybody’s heart with his incredible playing. He also needs a translator so overall communication might seem difficult, and then he starts playing…..

One of the interesting aspects of James Conlon’s work with the finalists over the years has been the way he explains and demonstrates the difference between accompanying and collaborating. Here with Evgeni Bozhanov in a spirited exchange…
