Public Radio Music Month Offerings

April is Public Radio Music Month, and a number of stations are doing special live events to celebrate.  I’ve seen only two listed by classical stations so far, so if you’re doing events be sure to let us know.

— April 8: WGUC, Cincinnati Public Radio, Cincinnati, OH – Broadcast of pianist Jonathan Biss with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
— April 27: KING-FM, Seattle, WA – Live performance and interview with cellist Joshua Roman on Sean MacLean’s exceptional show Northwest  Focus Live

And not to be disrespectful of these efforts, but there’s a whole cadre of us out here producing the best live performances we can all day, every day.  I produce two live shows a week: one for the Chicago Symphony and the other featuring some of the nation’s great music festivals.

You can’t believe how amazing the Chicago Symphony is sounding these days, especially with Riccardo Muti.  We’re airing live performances, so if you miss them you’ve missed them forever.  Why would a station turn down these unique, once-in-a-lifetime performances and instead play the same old CDs over and over again?

We just picked up Tanglewood in our America’s Music Festivals series and in June will air live concert performances from there with top conductors.

Today I worked on a spectacular show from Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo CA that featured a Quintet for Strings, Piano and Jazz Percussion by New York composer Patrick Zimmerli.  It has a second movement that’s as sumptuous and singable as anything by Rachmaninov or Tchaikovsky.  It’s music that absolutely should be heard, and it’s available only live.

Sorry.  I can’t help myself.  I just wish everybody got to hear what I’m hearing.
